GDPR: WHAT YOUR LIBRARY NEEDS TO KNOW
In May 2018, the European Union implemented the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This regulation allows entities in any part of the world that collect electronic personal data and have any exposure in the EU to better protect personal information and be transparent about what information they possess. Presented at the 2019 AALL Annual Meeting, the recording features a law firm partner who provides an overview of GDPR and explains how it differs from the United States’ privacy laws, which are driven by industry standards. He also discusses how the United States is responding to this new regulation. A law firm librarian and academic librarian identify how GDPR impacts vendors and highlight the importance of carefully evaluating the language included in contracts in order to help protect the privacy of their institution’s employees.
