Welcome to AALL’s October eNewsletter. This month I am pleased to announce completion of the latest edition of the AALL Price Index for Legal Periodicals and also the transfer of special interest section, chapter, committee, and caucus news from AALL Spectrum to AALLNET, enabling you to get more news faster. We have the latest information about memorial plans for our former Washington Affairs Representative Bob Oakley and the schedule for our upcoming Executive Board election. Also, don’t miss the RIPS-SIS Legal Technology Webinar, the newest recipients of AALL/BNA Continuing Education Grants, the opening of the AALL/Lexis Nexis Call for Papers competition, and news of a major grant received by the New England Law Library Consortium.

Bob Oakley Memorial Planned

Bob OakleyA memorial program will be held at Georgetown University Law Center to honor the life and legacy of Robert L. Oakley, who died Saturday, September 29. The memorial is planned for Tuesday, November 6, Bob’s birthday. The service will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Gewirz Student Center 12th floor. A reception will follow in the Reading Room of the Edward Bennett Williams Law Library.

If you would like to join the Georgetown Law community at the ceremony and reception, please RSVP by October 30. Please indicate “Oakley memorial” in the response. The Gewirz Student Center is located at 120 F Street, N.W. The Edward Bennett Williams Law Library is located one block away at 111 G Street, N.W.

At the time of his death Bob was serving as our AALL Washington affairs representative and as director of the law library and professor of law at Georgetown University. He also served as AALL president from 2000-2001 and two terms on the AALL Executive Board, from 1991-1994 and 1999-2002. Bob became AALL Washington affairs representative in 1989 and Georgetown law library director and professor in 1982. As the AALL Washington affairs representative he worked on a variety of issues, including access to government information, censorship, copyright, and telecommunications reform.

It is largely through Bob’s vision and leadership that AALL has become a leading voice in national and international legal information policy. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and colleagues. If you would like to make a donation in Bob’s name, you can do so through the AALL Centennial Fund.

AALL Online Elections Coming Up

AALL Online ElectionsThe AALL Online Election is fast approaching. AALL needs people to be on its Executive Board who represent the interests of all our members, so I strongly encourage you to vote. I often hear people say they don’t vote because they don’t know the candidates, but you have the opportunity to learn about their backgrounds and views from the biographies and statements posted on AALLNET. Please take the time to get to know your candidates and then vote.

We will open the polls for voting on Thursday, November 1. Online voting is fast and easy, but members who wish to receive a paper ballot may do so upon request to Vanessa Castillo, meeting services assistant, 312/939-4764, ext. 212, by Tuesday, October 23.

Election Schedule:

November 1: Ballots distributed electronically to all voting members.

December 1: Deadline for receipt of all ballots at AALL. Ballots will be tabulated at AALL, and the results will be announced once the candidates have been notified.

New Edition of the Price Index Now Available

The AALL Price Index for Legal Publications, 4d. is now available in the Members Only Section of AALLNET.

This year’s Price Index includes 2006 pricing information for more than 500 titles. The table-based report also includes details for the mean cost of titles and percentage increases over previous years for serial publications, legal periodical, loose-leaf services, commercially published court reporters, and supplemented treatises.

The purpose of the Price Index is to provide members with comparative information about past price changes in order to help with budgeting and collection development decisions. In gathering information for the Price Index, the committee asks publishers to provide their pricing. If a publisher declines to do so, its pricing is not included in the Index. Thomson West pricing is not included in this edition, as the company declined to provide pricing information.

Update on AALL’s National Summit on Authentication

AALL has been marching full steam ahead with the education and advocacy goals set during our National Summit on Authentic Legal Information in the Digital Age that was convened by Immediate Past President Sally Holterhoff last April. This past month, Mary Alice Baish joined Sally, Tim Coggins, and Keith Ann Stiverson, on panels to discuss our authentication report and the national summit at three important conferences of outside stakeholders’ the National Association of Legislative Information Technology’s 11th Annual Seminar in Springfield, Illinois; the 10th National Court Technology Conference in Tampa, Florida; and the Federal Depository Library Conference and Fall Depository Library Council Meeting in Arlington, Virginia.

We were delighted that two of our summit delegates were able to join us for these presentations. Tim Rice, executive director of the Illinois Legislative Information System, and Judge Herbert B. Dixon, Jr., from the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, participated in the panels in Springfield and Tampa, respectively. Be sure to read Judge Dixon”s excellent article in the August issue of The Judges” Journal on how the summit impacted his own views about information security, particularly how it relates to electronic filing.

Coming Soon: AALL Membership Survey

A comprehensive AALL member survey is currently in development and slated to be e-mailed to the membership in early November. This is the first member survey to be conducted in more than five years.

The goal of the survey is to get members’ candid opinions about AALL and its programs and services. Survey results will be shared with all of AALL’s committees, special interest sections, chapters, and the membership in an effort to improve and expand service to members.

Look for the survey in your inbox in the coming weeks. It should take you no more than 10 minutes to complete, and your responses will be kept confidential. Your participation will go a long way in helping AALL meet your needs and those of the law library community.

Check Your Mailbox for the 2007-2008 AALL Directory and Handbook

Our partners at Wolters Kluwer Law and Business have recently notified us that the 2007-2008 AALL Directory and Handbook was mailed out to AALL members by October 1. Sign up for the RIPS-SIS Legal Technology Webinar

The Research Instruction and Patron Services Special Interest Section is hosting a live Webinar on Thursday, November 15, from 2-3 p.m. (EST): Technical Issues and Practical Matters: A Law Library Q and A on Legal Technology. As part of the RIPS Repartee Webinar Series, Catherine Sanders Reach, director of the American Bar Association’s Legal Technology Resource Center, will give an update on current issues and advances in legal technology and address a number of questions posed by law librarians from around the country. The program will offer information valuable to all types of libraries, and you can get in on the action by submitting a question. For more information, e-mail Robb Farmer.

Changes for AALL Spectrum

AALL SpectrumNot only does AALL Spectrum have a new editorial director (Mark Estes, director of library services at Holme Roberts & Owen LLP), it also has a new change in content. Starting in September, the Chapter News, Committee News, SIS News, and Membership News columns moved from the magazine to AALLNET.

The new format will allow you to get more news that is delivered faster. You will be able to sort the news by type, date, and keyword, and you will be able to submit items easily to the news editors. Visit AALLNET regularly to see the latest AALL news.

AALL Announces New Continuing Education Grant Recipients

We are pleased to announce the latest AALL/BNA Continuing Education Grants Program award recipients. Congratulations to the Law Library Association of Greater New York (LLAGNY) and Washoe County Law Library.

LLAGNY received an award for the Managing across the Generations: Recruitment, Retention, and Retirement Strategies for the Librarian Profession program. Washoe County Law Library received an award for development of an interactive instructional legal reference video.

The second round of grants is coming up:

  • November 8: Proposals due to AALL Headquarters
  • November 9-26: Review of proposals
  • November 28: Announcement of funded grants
  • December 10: Disbursement of funds
  • August 30, 2008: Deadline for expenditure of funds

The Call for Papers has Begun

Have you been thinking about writing an article of interest to law librarians? The AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers Committee is soliciting articles in three categories for active and retired members (Open Division), recent graduates (New Member Division), and students in library, information management, or law school (Student Division).

The winner in each division receives $750 generously donated by LexisNexis plus the opportunity to make a presentation about his or her research and writing process at a program during the AALL Annual Meeting in Portland. Winning papers are also considered for publication in Law Library Journal.

Articles in the Open and New Members Division must be submitted by March 1, 2008. Articles in the Student Division must be submitted by April 15, 2008. Visit AALLNET for additional information and the application form.

AALL Committee Volunteer Applications Still Accepted

AALL is still accepting applications for 2008-2009 committee volunteers. Committees carry out AALL’s Strategic Directions of leadership, education, and advocacy, which in turn drives our professional future. Congratulations to NELLCO

The New England Law Library Consortium Inc. (NELLCO), a non-profit consortium of 101 law libraries in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom and AALL member, was recently awarded an Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant. The award of $364,150 will aid NELLCO in funding a two-year project to develop a Universal Search Solution.

The NELLCO Universal Search Solution will be based on open standards and open source software and will result in the creation of a physical master index of material, including participating library catalogs, as well as subscription-based databases and open content, special collections, and other resources that a participating library wishes to make discoverable to its patrons.
