AALL EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING HELD NOVEMBER 3
The AALL Executive Board met in Chicago on Friday, November 3. During the meeting, the Executive Board approved the following:
- A request to add vice chairs to AALL Juries. Appointments will take place in spring of 2018.
- Revisions to the Annual Meeting Site Selection Policy to include updated language that is in compliance with AALL’s antidiscrimination policy, as provided in Article III of the bylaws.
- Development of an Innovation Bootcamp education program to be held in fall 2018.
- The 2017-2018 AALL Strategic Directions action plan.
- The July 2017 Executive Board Meeting minutes.
- The Board tabled a request to reinstate financial support for AALL Liaisons to the ALA’s Subject Analysis Committee (SAC); ALA’s Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA); and the MARC Advisory Committee (MAC). This item was tabled so the Board could gather additional information, in consultation with the SIS Council.
- An AALL Body of Knowledge to serve as the framework for all professional development programs and content.
- A George A. Strait fellowship, in addition to the Strait scholarship. A new committee will be appointed this spring to oversee the new fellowship program

GEORGE A. STRAIT SCHOLARSHIP AND FELLOWS COMMITTEE
At the November meeting, the Executive Board approved the formation of the George A Strait Scholarship and Fellows Committee. The committee will award the existing scholarship and also oversee a newly established fellowship. The selected fellow will be matched with a host institution based on interest and availability that can provide a rich and fulfilling work experience. This committee will be appointed at the next appointments committee meeting in March 2018 and begin work in July 2018.

NEXT STEP IN THE PROCESS
Thanks again to all who proposed a program or workshop for AALL 2018. The Annual Meeting Program Committee(AMPC) reviewed all submissions using a detailed evaluation rubric, and the AMPC’s content team leaders met in Chicago last week to select and schedule the programming for next year, including the must-have programs that AALL members requested. The AMPC is in the process of contacting proposers, and programs will be announced later this winter–stay tuned!

APPLY FOR AN AALL LEXISNEXIS RESEARCH GRANT BY DECEMBER 1
AALL’s LexisNexis Research Grant Jury is accepting applications through December 1st for research grants from the AALL Research Fund (An Endowment Established by LexisNexis). The jury may allocate $5,000 between one or more applicants seeking funding for research that advances AALL’s Research Agenda which seeks to stimulate “a diverse range of scholarship related to and supportive of the profession of law librarianship.”
Established in July 2000, the annual grant funds research projects that create, disseminate, or use legal and library-related information. For inspiration, review the list of topics awarded grants in past years and explore the 16 broad research topics outlined in AALL’s Research Agenda.
If you have an upcoming research project that may benefit from this grant, access the complete guidelines and apply. As the guidelines indicate, the research should be completed within one year and the final product should be published, sharing the results with our professional community. Grants will be awarded and announced by the end of December.

FOR THE LEADER IN YOU
Since the dawn of community living, humans have engaged in storytelling. Early ancestors took to drawing on cave walls to describe tales of both victory and defeat. Hunting stories of the day’s spoils have been shared around the campfire since the discovery of flame. The act of drawing, telling, or writing our stories seems innate to the human experience.
Storytelling is used by people to educate, share culture, earn trust, and instill communal values. This is why developing strong storytelling skills can be a key asset to any leader. Learning techniques for constructing good narratives will engage listeners and help leaders drive their message. Numerous leadership experts have espoused as to how storytelling is beneficial for setting a vision, motivating individual behavior, and earning the confidence of those whom they lead. To quote author Warren Bennis, “The right anecdote can be worth a thousand theories.” If this is true, then learning how to craft that anecdote is essential to effective leadership.

- Janice Henderson was selected as the AALL Diversity & Inclusion Committee’s November Librarian of the Month.

- Keith Andrew Berthrong served as systems librarian for the Community College of Philadelphia Library in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He previously served as electronic services librarian at Drexel University—a position he held for nine years. He was also a member of the Academic Law Libraries Special Interest Section. He passed away October 13, 2017.
- Paul Rothman began his career as a lawyer before working with his father Fred at Fred B. Rothman Law Books in Denver, Colorado. He later assumed management and ownership of the business before eventually selling its assets to the William S. Hein Company. He was featured on the Hein Blog series “An Oral History of Law Librarianship” on November 13, 2015. He received his law degree from the University of Michigan and earned a Masters of Tax Law at New York University. He was a member of AALL since 1985. He passed away October 24, 2017.
