DUANE DISCUSSES WHAT HE VALUES MOST ABOUT HIS AALL MEMBERSHIP & SHARES HIS FAVORITE AALL MEMORY
Duane Strojny is the Associate Dean for Library and Instructional Support at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School Library in Lansing, Michigan.
WHY DID YOU JOIN AALL?
I joined AALL in 1989 at the recommendation of my mentors. They taught me the value of being a member in a professional organization from networking to learning new skills—they were right!
WHY DO YOU STAY A MEMBER?
I enjoy the excellent networking opportunities, great programming, and volunteer opportunities.
WHAT ONE MEMBER BENEFIT IS MOST VALUABLE TO YOU?
I find a lot value in all of the professional development opportunities that AALL offers.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY ASSOCIATED WITH AALL?
The first AALL Annual Meeting that I attended was in Reno, Nevada. It was held at a casino with an attached convention center. You could spend days without stepping outside the building and seeing daylight. I interviewed with the great staff of the University of Miami Law School Library and got my first librarian position as a result of that meeting!
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING OUTSIDE OF WORK?
I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, long walks, and going on bike rides.
WHAT BOOK(S) ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?
Camino Island by John Grisham (somehow I missed this one a few years ago), and The Way of Integrity by Martha Beck is on my short list.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL/VACATION DESTINATION?
I enjoy traveling to any place that is near water. I also enjoy national parks and rank Rocky Mountain National Park and Acadia National Park as two of my favorites. Having my wife and children along makes every trip more enjoyable and interesting.
