HANNAH SHARES HER FAVORITE AALL MEMBER BENEFIT AND HOW SHE BECAME INTERESTED IN LAW LIBRARIANSHIP

Hannah Evans is the Technical Services Librarian at the National Indian Law Library, Native American Rights Fund, in Boulder, Colorado.

HOW DID YOU GET INTERESTED IN LAW LIBRARIANSHIP?

While I was an undergraduate at the University of Denver, I worked at the circulation desk of the Westminster Law Library on campus, which began my career in libraries. I have worked at a number of places in a wide variety of roles, including as an interlibrary loan assistant at the USGS library, a teen librarian in western Colorado, and a branch supervisor at Denver Public Library. I started at the National Indian Law Library in January, and I’m excited to be back in law libraries and focusing on technical services.

WHY DID YOU JOIN AALL?

I joined AALL recently when I began my new position. Professional development has always been important to me as a librarian, and I am eager to connect with the broader law library community.

WHY DO YOU STAY A MEMBER?

I’m new here! But actually, I was a member when I was in library school. When I worked in special and public libraries, my membership expired, but I am glad to be back.

WHAT ONE MEMBER BENEFIT IS MOST VALUABLE TO YOU?

As a new member and as a person in a new position (both for me and for my organization), I really appreciate the eLearning opportunities available. I have a lot of library experience, but I have less experience in law, so brushing up with the Foundations of Legal Research course was very helpful. I have also been browsing some of the on-demand recordings and webinars.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY ASSOCIATED WITH AALL?

The AALL Annual Meeting in Denver was the first library conference I went to—not the most recent one, but the one in 2010 while I was in library school. Most memorably, I attended a program about Colorado cannibal Alferd Packer.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING OUTSIDE OF WORK?

I like to read, work in my garden, and do DIY projects around my house (shout out to the Denver Tool Library for having a lot of interesting classes like tiling, welding, and beekeeping, as well as tools for rent). I’m looking forward to the summer and spending some time in the mountains soon.

WHAT BOOK(S) ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

I just finished Stolen by Ann-Helen Laestadius about a young Sámi female reindeer herder in Sweden—this was the pick for a book club at work and was an interesting read.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL/VACATION DESTINATION?

I like taking small trips around Colorado and the Southwest whenever I have the chance.
