March 2008

Later this month you'll vote for the 2008/09 Chair of the Council of Chapter Presidents. We have three excellent candidates: Kevin Butterfield (VALL), Jennifer Murray (AzALL) and Karen Selden (CoALL). Their biographies and statements will be distributed to the list next week.

Each chapter has one vote, so you'll need to decide whether the Vice President or President will cast his/her vote on behalf of your chapter. Voting will begin on Friday March 14 and conclude on April 1. It's important that all 31 chapters vote!

Chapter Visits

The AALL Board is especially pleased that there have been so many chapter visits this year to 23 of the 31 chapters. Certainly one of the reasons for the increase is because AALL is paying the full cost of the visit. However, the chapter leadership should be congratulated on extending the invitations and giving the Board members the opportunity to meet your members and see what a wonderful job you're doing. This is a time to call attention to yourselves and let your light shine!

Annual Meeting Chapter Leadership Training

Save the date, Saturday July 12, for the current Presidents and Vice Presidents to attend the annual meeting chapter leadership training. The morning session will offer presentations on the work of the Special Committee on Involving All Our Members, tips on creating a strategic plan, and help with planning a program as well as a chance to get to know other chapter leaders. At noon we will join the SIS Council for lunch, followed by an afternoon of presentations from many AALL staff on issues involving finances, Washington affairs, and continuing education.

In addition, during the annual meeting there will be roundtables on Public Relations, Government Relations, Meeting Management and Chapter Treasurer training. I'll give more details in next month's Chat.

AALL Activities Area

If your chapter is planning on exhibiting in the activities area in Portland, remember to submit your reservation form to AALL Program Manager Heidi Letzmann by April 15.

Scholarships Available

Be sure to let your members know that there are scholarships available from AALL. Visit AALLNET for complete information, instructions and applications. The deadline is April 1.

Revising Chapter Biography Form

The AALL Task Force on Chapter Visits has completed its work and one result is the creation of an interactive chapter biography form. In the past there was a lengthy form that chapters were encouraged to complete. It was submitted to Headquarters where it was filed and available on request. The new form has been streamlined. It can be filled out and submitted online and the information will be available in the chapter resources section of AALLNET. I'll send more information and directions for completion at a later date.

Grant Application

The AALL Research Committee is accepting applications for research grants from the AALL Research Fund: An Endowment Established by LexisNexis®. A single grant of up to $5,000, or multiple grants totaling $5,000, may be awarded. The committee will award one or more grants to library professionals who wish to conduct research that supports the research and scholarly agenda of the profession of law librarianship. For more information, see the grant announcement.

The deadline for applications is April 1. Please contact Susan Lerdal, Chair, AALL Research Committee if you have questions.

AALL Mentoring Project

The AALL Mentoring Project matches new law librarians with experienced law librarians providing an opportunity for a reliable, neutral source of professional guidance outside of the mentee's place of employment. The Mentoring Committee aims to recruit mentors that intend to maintain contact beyond the AALL Annual Meeting. Attendance at AALL is not a prerequisite for serving in either capacity.

A new feature of the Mentor Project is the matching of Mentors and Mentees on a rolling basis as matches reflecting mentor and mentee applicant preferences can be made. To ensure a match prior to the Annual Meeting in Portland complete the application by May 11.

Questions about the Mentor Project can be directed to Beth Adelman at
