Education is at the forefront of our news this month. Register for the upcoming SharePoint webinar, check out the AALL2go pick on social media, apply for an AALL Research Grant, or travel overseas for the CAFLL Conference in Shanghai or the IALL Conference in Barcelona. Remember that the Winter 2013 issue of Law Library Journal would make a great traveling companion.

Leadership opportunities abound. Volunteer for an AALL committee to share your talents or learn new ones. Write and be recognized by entering the Call for Papers. Consider nominating a colleague for AALL's Executive Board. Apply for the Minority Leadership Development Award, and read about the accomplishments of members in the Member News section.

Registration Opening Soon for the 2013 AALL Annual Meeting

Registration for the 106th Annual Meeting and Conference in Seattle will be opening soon. Watch for a personalized email announcing the official opening, including your member ID number, which you'll need to obtain member-discounted pricing. Spread the word to your nonmember colleagues: Nonmember Conference Registration packages include a complimentary one-year AALL membership. By joining us in Seattle, they'll be joining AALL!

A lot of work has gone into making this year's conference experience better than ever - with so much to offer, you can't afford to miss it. Based on member responses to last year's educational needs assessment, the Annual Meeting Program Committee has put together a fantastic lineup of programs and workshops. We'll kick things off with keynote speaker David Weinberger, a technologist whose work focuses on information management, the internet marketplace, and the human behaviors that shape it. A new slate of programs are being produced in collaboration with the International Legal Technology Association, and an exciting new highlight is the Monday Morning Recharge, designed to give you a mid-conference boost and ways to rethink your professional development. Stay tuned for more details about these expert-led sessions. You'll have even more reasons to explore the Exhibit Hall with Association events that include the Saturday Opening Reception and an attendee lunch on Monday. There will also be a Monday night member appreciation event and the Association Luncheon on Tuesday.

Volunteer for a Committee

Become an active member of our Association by volunteering for an AALL committee. Our committees help to implement AALL's Strategic Directions, and July 2013 is the start of our new 2013-2016 Strategic Plan. The new plan's directions include authority, advocacy, and education, which we hope will lead the Association forward.

There are 24 standing committees to choose from. The committees focus on either policy issues or process functions. After you have explored the different committees, please fill out the volunteer form. The form will close February 28.

AALL Commends GPO for "Keeping America Informed"

AALL's Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) Task Force Chair Sally Holterhoff and I recently wrote a letter to Acting Public Printer Davita Vance-Cooks to express AALL's appreciation for the Government Printing Office's (GPO's) leadership in providing no-fee permanent public access to federal information resources in tangible and electronic formats, including developing FDsys into a trusted repository and working with depository libraries to shape the future of the FDLP. The recently released congressionally mandated review of GPO conducted by the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) echoed much of our praise, including commending GPO for transforming itself to meet the needs of users in the digital age. However, while AALL supports many of NAPA's recommendations, we are concerned with NAPA's suggestion that GPO charge users for FDsys content. As AALL Director of Government Relations Emily Feltren explains on the Washington Blawg, "Charging for FDsys violates AALL policy that digital government information disseminated via government websites must be available at no cost."

The Government Relations Office will work with GPO, members of Congress, and our allies to ensure that GPO has the support it needs to continue to provide no-fee permanent public access to official, authentic government information.

Final Call for Papers: Submission Deadline March 1

Have you been thinking of writing an article of interest to law librarians? The AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers Committee has just the incentive to get you started – its Call for Papers Awards.

The committee is soliciting articles in four categories:

Open Division: for active and retired AALL members and law librarians with five or more years of professional experience.

New Member Division: for recent graduates and AALL members who have been in the profession for less than five years.

Short Form Division: for AALL members; articles in this category will be shorter than a traditional scholarly article and appropriate for publication in AALL Spectrum, a bar journal, or a chapter or special interest section newsletter.

Student Division: for students in library, information management, or law school. Participants in this division need not be members of AALL. To submit in this category, you must have been enrolled in law school or in a library school, information management, or equivalent program in the fall 2012 or spring 2013 semester.

Submissions in the Open, New Member, and Short Form Divisions must be submitted by March 1. Articles in the Student Division must be submitted by May 15.

The winners in the Open, New Member, and Student Divisions will receive $650, and the Short Form Division winner will receive $300, all generously donated by LexisNexis, plus the opportunity to present their winning papers at a program during the AALL Annual Meeting in Seattle. Winning papers in the Open, New Member, and Student Divisions are also considered for publication in Law Library Journal.

Make a Difference - Consider Running for AALL Office

AALL is looking for the next leaders of the Association. If you or someone you know has proven leadership experience, commitment to law librarianship, and the demonstrated ability to think strategically, please consider serving on the AALL Executive Board.

The Nominations Committee is asking members to nominate individuals for the 2013 AALL Executive Board election. The committee is looking for strong candidates for the offices of vice president/president-elect, secretary, and two Executive Board members. The election will be held in November for three-year terms beginning July 2014.

If you or someone you know is ready to serve on the AALL Executive Board, let the Nominations Committee know. The chair of this year's committee is Catherine Lemann of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit Library. You can email her your nomination. The committee is accepting nominations through March 15.

Apply for Research Grants to be Awarded by the AALL Research Fund

The AALL Research and Publications Committee is accepting applications through April 1 for research grants totaling up to $5,000 from the AALL Research Fund: An Endowment Established by LexisNexis.

Established with a generous endowment from LexisNexis in July 2000, the annual grants fund large or small research projects that create, disseminate, or use legal and law-related information. The AALL Research Agenda offers suggestions for possible research projects that cover a wide segment of professional interest.

The grant application and complete guidelines are available here. Grants will be awarded and announced in May.

Deadline Approaching for the Minority Leadership Development Award

The AALL Diversity Committee is accepting applications for its annual Minority Leadership Development Award (MLDA) through March 1. Apply now!

The MLDA was created in 2001 to nurture leaders for the future and to introduce minority law librarians to leadership opportunities within the Association. The award winner will receive prepaid travel, lodging, and registration for the 2013 AALL Annual Meeting; an experienced AALL leader to serve as the recipient's mentor for at least one year; and the opportunity to serve on an AALL committee during the coming Association year, which begins immediately following the conclusion of the Annual Meeting.

Third International CAFLL Conference to be Held June 10-12 in Shanghai

The third international conference of the Chinese and American Forum on Legal Information and Law Libraries (CAFLL), of which AALL is a sponsor, will be held in Shanghai June 10-12. Hosted by the East China University of Political Science and Law, t he venue for the meeting will be the beautiful Renaissance Shanghai Zhongshan Park Hotel.

With the theme of Collaboration: Information, Access, and Partnership, law librarians and legal information professionals will have the opportunity to share experiences and exchange views about legal information access and management in both the United States and China.

Conference registration closes April 1, and hotel accommodations (to ensure room availability) close February 28.

IALL's Annual Conference will be held in Barcelona September 15-19

The International Association of Law Libraries (IALL) has made available its preliminary program for its 32nd Annual Conference to be held September 15-19 in Barcelona. The conference, Catalan Law and Legal Information in a Global Context, will focus on topics reflecting Catalonia's unique perspectives on international and domestic issues. Early-bird registration opens March 1.

Winter 2013 Law Library Journal Available

The Winter 2013 issue of Law Library Journal is now available. It features articles on how federal statutes are named and on the public mission of public law school libraries. Two winning papers from last year's AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers competition are also included - one on the development of the George Wythe collection at William and Mary Law School and the other on building analytical skill into legal research instruction.

AALL2go Pick of the Month: Social Media for Career Enhancement

It has become increasingly important for librarians to understand how to further their careers through the appropriate use of social media. This quick, 39-minute presentation by Laura Young and April Kessler gives librarians advice about how to use common social media sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter for networking and job searching purposes. Each of these services is different, and the presenters do a great job of explaining the benefits and pitfalls of each. The practical information presented by the program will assist social media users, regardless of experience level.

AALL members Mark Gediman, director of information services at Best Best & Krieger LLP in Riverside, California, and Monice Kaczorowski, director of library services and competitive intelligence at Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg LLP in Chicago, were recently interviewed for Legal Management magazine, a publication of the Association of Legal Administrators, for an article titled "Getting Smart About Intelligence." Additionally, Gediman will join a panel at the Legal Marketing Association Annual Meeting for a session titled Law Firm Competitive Intelligence: A Roadmap for Success.

Yolonda P. Harrison is the new legal research and digital initiatives law librarian at Florida International University College of Law in Miami. Prior to her arrival at FIU in January, she served as an assistant professor and reference/electronic resources librarian at Seton Hall University School of Law in Newark, New Jersey, and as an adjunct professor and web development librarian at North Carolina Central University School of Law in Durham.

Jim Senter is now the California region library services manager for Jones Day in Los Angeles. He served as California region research librarian from 1999-2012.

Deborah Showalter-Johnson, branch librarian for the U.S. Courts Library in Kansas City, Missouri, retired on December 31 after 22 years. Originally hired as the assistant librarian, she became branch librarian in 2002. She also served as president of the Kansas City Association of Law Libraries from 2005-2006. An expert researcher, she was often called upon by other 8th Circuit staff to help with their toughest questions.

Linda Will, director at Thompson & Knight LLP in Dallas, is presenting Books vs. Online – The Battle Continues, one of the Future Law Firm Sessions, at the Association of Legal Administrators Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.
