For many librarians, the nature of linked data provokes feelings of helplessness. For years, librarians have heard about the impending arrival of linked data, but often the information was abstract. There seem to be few practical examples or strategies libraries could use to prepare staff members and catalogs for future linked data environments. This presentation will detail a practical project currently underway at Rice University’s Fondren Library to prepare for a future linked data environment. Scott Carlson, Fondren’s metadata coordinator, will discuss an ongoing plan to transform the library’s bibliographic database into webpages loaded with linked data concepts, which can be fed to Google and used to direct patrons to the library’s un-Google-able OPAC. This program is sponsored by the OBS-SIS.
