2009 Revision

Dear CONELL participant

AALL is fast upon us and I want to take the opportunity to introduce myself, tell you a little something about OBS-SIS, encourage you to join OBS-SIS, and invite you to stop by the CONELL Marketplace on Saturday, July 12th, to register to win a $25 Amazon gift card from OBS-SIS.

My name is Andrea Rabbia, and I am the Chair of OBS-SIS.

OBS-SIS is the Online Bibliographic Services Special Interest Section of AALL. Originating in 1977 as the OCLC-SIS, the Online Bibliographic Services Special Interest Section (OBS-SIS) broadened its scope to include all bibliographic utilities and local online systems. The OBS-SIS membership is diverse, embracing staff from both public and technical services who serve in law libraries of every type and size. The section addresses the professional concerns and interests of its members, extending across all organizational boundaries. The section's interests include all aspects of national and local bibliographic online systems, including public access to bibliographic data, technical services functions, interlibrary loan services, and the integration within local systems of data from remote sources.

Please consider joining OBS-SIS, the Online Bibliographic Services-Special Interest Section of AALL! OBS-SIS membership benefits include:

  • generous mentoring, including the OBS/TS Joint Research Roundtable,
  • financial opportunities through the OBS/TS Joint Research Grants,
  • a forum for the exchange of information and ideas on the implementation and use of local automated library systems through our Local Systems Committee,
  • fantastic educational programming,
  • great annual meeting events! Go to http://www.aallnet.org/database/meeting_annual_events.asp, select meeting type = SIS meetings, and scan down to OBS where you will find a list of OBS events and meetings at the July conference.
  • OCLC Updates and OCLC Roundtables,
  • opportunities to participate in reviewing NISO standards,
  • as well as representation to OCLC and MARBI.

To join OBS-SIS, go to http://www.aallnet.org, click on Special Interest Sections, then click on Join a SIS and select OBS-SIS.

Or stop by the CONELL Marketplace on Saturday and visit the OBS-SIS table. You can pick up a brochure, which also has a tear-off membership form, chat with me, and enter your business card for the chance to win a $25.00 gift card from Amazon. The drawing will be in the Exhibit Hall on Monday, July 14th at 1:45 PM.

If you miss me at the CONELL Marketplace, you can also stop by the OBS-SIS table in the Exhibit Hall. There you can also enter the contest for an Amazon gift card, pick up an OBS-SIS brochure, help yourself to some candy, or pick up something new to read from our Annual Paperback Exchange!

I hope to see you there!
