CONGRATULATIONS TO LEANNE CUMMINGS OF BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA! – THE RECIPIENT OF THE 2008 FCIL SCHAFFER GRANT FOR FOREIGN LAW LIBRARIANS
Leanne Cummings is the national library manager of Deacons, a major international law firm with more than 900 lawyers across Australia and Asia. Ms. Cummings’ responsibilities include managing the strategic operations and direction of Deacon’s research services throughout Australia. In addition to supervising four teams of library staff based throughout Australia, she is also responsible for the development and administration of Deacons’ intranet based legal services. Her prior law librarianship experience includes serving as Research Centre Electronic Content Coordinator for Deacons and as the Library Manager for Queensland Police Service.
An active member of both the national and state (Queensland) divisions of the Australian Law Librarians’ Association (ALLA) since 1997, Ms. Cummings has presented numerous conference papers, published several articles, and lectured on various issues involving the practice and pedagogy of law librarianship. Ms Cummings served as the President of the Queensland division of ALLA (2005-2006) and is also involved with other professional and academic organizations related to information technology, evidence, criminal justice, women’s advocacy, and policing.
A regular participant at Australian librarianship conferences and seminars, but a first-time attendee at AALL, Ms. Cummings is interested in sharing her impressions regarding the trends that are occurring in the Australian legal industry and their impact on Australian law librarians. The 2008 FCIL Schaffer Grant Committee believes that these insights will be valuable to both FCIL-SIS members and the AALL membership as a whole. Ms. Cummings is eager to meet and learn from American law librarians. She is particularly interested in hearing about remote and online delivery of training materials and library services, the application of wikis and other Web 2.0 features in the law library, and the different ways that law librarians approach strategic planning in a corporate environment.
Please join the 2008 FCIL Schaffer Grant Committee in welcoming Ms. Cummings to Portland this summer!
2007/08 Schaffer Grant Committee Members: Tom Kimbrough, Teresa Miguel, and Christopher O’Byrne
